I agree with Mr. Hernandez. My family was one of the founding families of St. Monica Parish, envelope #70. When Bishop Taylor was there, St. Monica was a very authentic Catholic Church. There were no paid employees except for the Priest and the Pastoral Associate. All families were encouraged to give of their time AND their talents, creating a sense of familial love among all parishioners. As the beautiful Church was built, we all marveled at the ability of Bishop Taylor to follow the Biblical precepts of total stewardship, and welcome to all. Since that time, a few more priests have been assigned there and slowly, this focus has been lost. With the current Priest, St. Monica has gone backwards: many paid employees, many strict rules that do NOT follow the teachings of our current Pope Francis. As a convert to the faith of 39 years, I am appalled at the practice of not allowing women or girls on the altar for any reason in serving positions. What is this return to pre-Vatican practices going to accomplish? Many, many people have left the Parish to attend Masses that are welcoming and inclusive to all. The young priests that are assisting Fr. Hamilton are getting the wrong idea about how the liturgy should be conducted. The Priest should never turn his back to the people, both physically and figuratively. I do not understand how Archbishop Coakley continues to allow this schism with the true practices of present-day Catholicism to continue. If you want to attend a true Catholic Church where all are welcomed and treated with respect, please come to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 1616 N Kelley, in Oklahoma City. Mass is at 11 am every Sunday and you will feel that you have been welcomed back to the Catholic family when you attend there! I have been a parishioner for over 13 years at Corpus Christi and although I miss many of my old friends who still live in Edmond, most of them have left St. Monica and are attending St. John the Baptist Parish. Listen to the Pope's teachings and you will learn what a true Catholic Church should be: a hospital for sinners to receive the Sacraments and be welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus!

  • We love this parish - felt at home here almost immediately. We felt this parish was strong on tradition, and the homilies from Fr Stanley and Fr Hamilton are excellent. There are also lots of opportunities to become active in the parish itself, due to the focus on stewardship.

It is a sad day when I have to recommend new comers to Edmond not bother attending St. Monica. My wife and I were members before the main church was built when services were in the parish hall. Father (now Bishop) Taylor welcomed us and we felt right at home. Now St. Monica is the stepchild in Edmond and when St. John's has issues they yank our priest to ship him over there. Now there is a quest to turn the clock hands back 60 years to pre-Vatican II standards. Guests are not welcomed and as a father of two girls I hate they are considered second class citizens of the church. To not be allowed to become a priest is one thing. To not be allowed to serve on the altar because they are female is ridiculous and backwards. At a time when Pope Francis is trying to move the church forward, St. Monica has taken 10 steps back.
